Overview of Professional Hibernate Book

This book is written for professional Java developers who already understand how to build server-side Java applications. The book assumes no previous experience with Hibernate, though readers should have a general familiarity with databases and Web development. After a quick overview of Hibernate in the first two chapters, the authors jump right to the code. They show how to: Obtain and install Hibernate Build the Hibernate development environment Use Hibernate to connect to databases Use Hibernate to create persistent classes and objects Use the Hibernate database query language and transaction management functions Use the Hibernate APIs After covering these essentials, the authors go further, showing readers how to use Hibernate in the real world. This means demonstrating how to use Hibernate with other popular tools that readers are using (including Eclipse, Tomcat, Maven, Struts, and XDoclet). This book takes a very real-world, hands-on approach to these topics and includes many working code examples, as well as a sophisticated sample application. In practice EJB has proven much too complex for most developers to use. EJB is also plagued with a large number of proprietary technologies--something that the developer community as a whole is less and less willing to accept. Hibernate is an elegant and effective solution to these problems; it has even been called the "EJB killer" because it is far easier to use, provides more functionality, greatly reduces the amount of code needed for data manipulation, and is a true non-proprietary solution. Hibernate not only replaces EJB, it also replaces Sun's JDO technology. Hibernate is designed to work with servlets, JSPs, and all other prominent Java technologies, making it an excellent solution for all enterprise and Web application development projects. Hibernate also has built-in support for all popular relational databases. This book will cover the next major release of Hibernate, 2.2, scheduled for July 2004, and it should have a shelf life of at least 18 months. Special Features: Hibernate has become a defacto open source standard--Struts, Eclipse, Spring, and JBoss have all been retooled to work easily with Hibernate. Hibernate's market size is similar to that for Struts, with phenomenal growth over the past year. (250K annualized downloads projected by June 2004; each download supports multiple users.) The lead author is on the Hibernate development team, so our book will be authoritative and is likely to be the first programmer book out.
