Overview of Strategic Management - Analysis, Implementation and Control Book

Strategic management is taught as a core subject in MBA/PGDM programmes in Indian universities and business schools. The course is differently titled in different universities/business schools. In some institutes, it is called Business Policy and Strategic Management; in some other institutes, it is titled as Strategic Business Management; in some others, it is Strategic Management. But the basic content and focus are the same to teach the basic principles, theories, techniques, models and applications of strategic management of business. The Approach Most of the books on strategic management presently available in the Indian market are written by foreign authors mostly of US. Therefore, the illustrations, examples and cases mostly relate to foreign/US companies. Some of these books are now published in India as Indian Adaptation. But there is very little change in the content and presentation. Few textbooks have been written by Indian authors. Not all of them are comprehensive enough to be prescribed as complete textbooks. Some were written quite sometime back, but, have not been regularly updated. So those may not be exactly contemporary. There is, therefore, a gap or a void, and it has been felt that there is scope for a book that takes care of the needs of the Indian students. And my experience of teaching strategic mangement course over a number of years has prompted me to endeavour writing a book on the subject. The present book is an attempt in this direction a textbook which is written in the context of Indian business environment, but with global orientation and, is comprehensive and contemporary. Structure of the Book To give comprehensive coverage to the subject of strategic management, the book has been structured in seven parts six parts for strategy analysis, implementation and control and one part (Part VII) for case analysis. Part I is devoted to understanding of the strategic management process. This is done through three chapters: Understanding Corporate Strategy (Chapter 1), the Strategic Management Process itself (Chapter 2) and Corporate Strategy and Corporate Governance (Chapter 3). Chapter 2 also specifies the complete strategic management model or the framework which provides a guided tour of the entire book and the analysis that follows. Part II deals with the internal and external factors: Corporate Mission, Objectives and Responsibilities (Chapter 4), Internal Competences and Resources (Chapter 5) and the External Environmental Factors (Chapter 6). Chapter 4 deals in detail with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and some of the latest developments on this, including the debate on CSR and profitability. Part III consists of analysis of various corporate strategies/strategy alternatives and is the core of the book. This part provides a comprehensive analysis of various strategy options available to companies. All these strategies can be classified into three major types or categories: Stability Strategies (Chapter 7), Strategies for Managing Change (Chapter 8) and Expansion Strategies (Chapter 9). Combination strategies have also been discussed. Part IV deals with competitive analysis, selection and activation of strategy and organizing for success. This part consists of two chapters. Chapter 10 is devoted to industry and competition analysis carried out in three major sections: industry analysis, competitor analysis and competitive advantage analysis. Special reference has been made to hypercompetition which is increasingly becoming characteristic of contemporary competition.
