Adam Bede was published in 1859 and was the first novel by Mary Ann Evans popularly known as George Eliot. Hetty’s unprecedented pregnancy causes a turn of events after she delivers her baby but abandons it in the fields. By the time she realizes her folly, the infant succumbs to the forces of nature and dies of exposure. Hetty is accused of child murder and sentenced to execution for infanticide just when she is saved by her seducer, Arthur Donnithorne. In the critic’s opinion the ending is not justi- fied morally and conflicts with the other realistic events depicted in the novel. Adam Bede seeks to manifest aesthetic philosophy and has minutely detailed psychological aspects about illiterate country people. Greater proximity to nature makes these common people humbler and purer. The novel attempts to highlight these pure fea- tures of common people.
