Overview of Anthology of Modern English Prose Book

This is a strange moment for teachers of English. While our subject has become irrelevant in a culture of globalization, radical advances in literary and cultural theory have made literature an important site for cultural critique. We can overcome the difficulties created by the former by teaching linguistic and analytical skills and build on the strengths of the latter, thereby making the courses socially relevant. The present anthology has been compiled with this double objective in mind and is intended for use in general English courses in B.A. and B.Com. programmes. The selections from G.B. Shaw, A.G. Gardiner, Katherine Mansfield, Mahatma Gandhi, R.K. Narayan, Ruskin Bond and E.M. Forster are included for their diverse prose styles. The stories of Rajinder Singh Bedi and Sadaat Hasan Manto comment upon communal violence and jingoistic nationalism so rampant today. The extract from Kalpana Jain's Positive Lives addresses an urgent social problem - AIDS-related stigma and discrimination. Ismat Chugtai's enigmatic story exa- mines the status of women in a patriarchal society, while Ramachandra Guha's biographical essay deals with ecological consciousness. The anthology thus aims to teach compositional skills and to develop the critical consciousness necessary for intellectual growth. Salient features: Prepared in accordance with the UGC Model Curriculum, 2001 Selections reflect postcolonial trends and aim to sensitise students to the politics of language Approach to texts keep in mind the current contexts and social implications Detailed annotation of each selection Practice questions following the examination pattern of most Indian universities
