Smith, Jerry March Michael B. Smith is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, Connecticut. Professor Smith received his PhD from Purdue University in 1977, and completed his post-doctoral studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979 as a NIH postdoctoral trainee. His current research interests include the total synthesis of pancratistatin and related phenanthridone alkaloids, asymmetric synthesis of fused-ring alkaloids using a chiral lactam-ring-closing metathesis strategy, the asymmetric synthesis of sphingosine derivatives from a chiral lactam template, the synthesis and identification of bacterial sphingolipids from dental disease, and the use of conducting polymers as synthetic reagents for environmentally friendly oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones.
