Helliconia: Helliconia Spring, Helliconia Summer, Helliconia Winter (SF Masterworks) is book collection of the science fiction series, the Helliconia book series that was written by Brian Aldiss. The series was first published from 1983 to 1985.Set in a futuristic world, some 6000 years in the future, the books describe the happenings on a planet called Helliconia, with a climate similar to that of Earth. But unlike planet Earth, Helliconia has very long years, called the Great Year, extending as long as 2500 Earth years, with each climatic season extending for many years at a stretch. The three books deal with the events during Spring, Summer and Winter respectively. Earth s space station, Avernus orbits the planet to observe it and its strange inhabitants, the Phagors and the human-like species who have human ancestral ape-like features (referred to as Humans).The first book (Helliconia Spring) starts in an age where the Phagors are the ruling faction, with a small faction of humans living as nomadic tribes and other civilised humans being governed harshly by the Phagors. The Yuli, a human tribal, somehow reaches the city and leads the revival of the human race in the face of a terrible plague- the bone fever. The second book (Helliconia Summer) sees the humans existing as a big empire. The residents of Avernus hold lotteries and the winners get to go to the planet and experience the life there. One of the winners, Billy Xiao Pin, goes down and gets involved with events on the planet with grave consequences. The third book (Heliconia Winter) deals with the Northern Continent of Sibornal and the affliction of a deadly disease called the Fat Death. The book follows the life of Luterin Shokerandit, the son of the Keeper of the Wheel of Kharnabar, a mystical ring-shaped prison and his travels and adventures. It chronicles the tragedies he faces and the mystical journey of spirituality and time that he experiences.
