Measure for Measure, a famous play by the stalwart William Shakespeare, was probably written in 1603 or 1604 and first staged in 1604, going by the records available to us. It was published in the First Folio in 1623 which comprises a collection of his works under the title Mr. William Shakespeare's Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies. The play presents a compact plot featuring its protagonist, The Duke of Vienna, Vincentio, who steps away from public life on a diplomatic mission leaving the affairs of the city under the governance of a strict judge, Angelo. Angelo's public image has been portrayed as tremendously ascetic so much so that he is shown to have decided to torn down all brothels of the city. Meanwhile we are introduced to two more characters, Claudio and Lucio. Claudio is to be executed for his crime of sleeping with Juliet with whom he is engaged to be married. The act becomes public when Juliet gets pregnant by him. Lucio is a close friend of Claudio. Lucio urgently meets Isabella, the extremely beautiful and compassionate novice nun and the beloved sister of Claudio. Lucio pleads with Isabella to intercede with Angelo and try and convince him to pardon Claudio. The second phase of the plot unfolds the deceitful nature of Angelo who though publicly austere and severe, is really a corrupt and lecher at heart. When Isabella meets Angelo to plead on Claudio’s behalf, Angelo is overwhelmed by an intense desire for the enigmatically beautiful and innocent lady and makes a deal to pardon Claudio’s life in exchange for her virginity. Even when Isabella threatens to expose his corrupt intentions, Angelo remains relentless in his undesirable intentions of enjoying Isabella’s sexual favour as he was confident that no one will believe Isabella over his steadfast reputation and his intentions will never be uncovered.
