Bahram Modi, a Bombay-based parsi opium trader owns the Anahita, while Flitcher Penrose owns the Redruth and the Ibis. The Ibis is carrying convicts, Neel Rattan, a zamindar and Ah Fatt, a Canton-based criminal. This novel delves into the different levels and faces of these major characters. Bahram Modi is a lowly son-in-law who gets his rich father-in-law to give him the seed capital that he needs to step into the opium trade.Bahram executes several successful expeditions to China, which helps him generate a great deal of wealth for his family. However, his father-in-law suddenly passes away, after which Bahram's brothers-in-law attempt to coerce him into giving up his trade. Bahram is adamant to ship a huge consignment of opium to China, despite its ban in the country. His family in Bombay are oblivious of the fact that Bahram has a son from a Chinese woman, Chi Mei. This son is Ah Fat. Flitcher Penrose is on a search for rare plants in China.
