In this play, a wealthy countryman named Mr Hardcastle arranges a meet between his daughter Kate and a Londoner named Charles Marlow, in the hopes that they will marry each other. So Marlow and his friend George Hastings start on their journey to Hardcastle s house. They get lost on the way and stop at an alehouse to ask for directions. Tony Lumpkin, Kate's half-brother, who is also at the alehouse, decides to play a practical joke on them.Tony tells Charles that they should spend the night in an inn. He then directs them to the home of Hardcastle. When Charles and George arrives, they are given a very warm welcome. However, the two men behave disdainfully as they think that they are in an inn. Miss Constance Neville, the niece of Mrs Hardcastle, informs Kate about her suitor's shyness. Hence, Kate decides to dress up as a serving made. Charles falls in love with her and wants to elope. Meanwhile, George has fallen for Constance and wants to run away with her. However, the young lady says that she can t leave behind all her jewels, which are being guarded by her aunt.
