The Virginians, also known as The Virginians: A Tale of the Last Century as the com- plete title, was first published serially in twenty-four parts during the years 1857 to 59 and as a single volume in 1859. This novel was designed as a sequel to Henry Esmond, and is based in colonial Virginia. The novel depicts the life of the family and descendants of Henry Esmond of Castlewood, Virginia. Esmond’s grandsons reveal themselves as having opposing views and positions during the American Revolution, but they reconcile after the war. Harry comes to own the family’s Virginia estates and George gets the share of land and property in England. Critics receive the book in a favourable note. It came to be designated as one of the standard fictional works of the 19th century. Critics did have some displeasure with the novel’s plotting. Anthony Trollope commented on the book: “There is not a page of it vacant or dull. But he who takes it up to read as a whole, will find that it is the work of a desultory writer, to whom it is not infrequently difficult to remember the incidents of his own narrative.”
