Overview of Written For Ever Book

The starting of Written For Ever can be traced back to the 1990s, when Civil Lines was launched in 1994 as an Indian Literary Magazine by publisher Ravi Dayal from New Delhi. Ravi Dayal had worked as an editor for the Oxford University Press since 1971. After his retirement in 1987, he opened his own publishing company, Ravi Dayal Publishers, which came out with Civil Lines. It was inspired by the British magazine, Granta, with a focus on good-quality, unpublished reportage, fiction and personal history. This inquisitive magazine appealed instantly to the growing urban Indian population, who were literate and intellectual. It contains work from writers such as Rukun Advani, Ramchandra Guha and Arvind Krishna Mehrotra. Civil Lines came out with subsequent issues erratically, claiming that it was a sign of good quality. This magazine did not follow the usual model of publishing a magazine, since there was no definite date as to when it would be published. The main focus of the editors was on quality and they published an issue only when they thought they had enough good material. The end result was this: only five issues have been published till now. However, it established numerous new writers such as Amitava Kumar, Suketu Mehta, Siddharth Deb and Manjula Padmanabhan. Written For Ever is a compilation of the essays, poems and stories which were published in the first five issues of Civil Lines. This volume has been edited by one of the four original writers, Rukun Advani and was published in 2014 by Hachette India as a paperback.
